Abstract

Purpose

This paper is an unprecedented effort to resolve the performance issue of very large scale integrated circuits (VLSI) interconnects encountered because of the scaling of device dimensions. Repeater interpolation technique is an effective approach for enhancing speed of interconnect network. Proposed buffers as repeater are modeled by using dual chirality multi-Vt technology to reduce delay besides mitigating average power consumption. Interconnects modeled with carbon nanotube (CNT) technology are compared with copper interconnect for various lengths. Buffer circuits are designed with both CNT and metal oxide semiconductor technology for comparison by using various combination of (CMOSFET repeater-Cu interconnect) and (CNTFET repeater-CNT interconnect). Compared to conventional buffer, ProposedBuffer1 saves dynamic power by 84.86%, leakage power by 88% and offers reduction in delay by 72%. ProposedBuffer2 brings about dynamic power saving of 99.94%, leakage power saving of 93%, but causes delay penalty. Simulation using Stanford SPICE model for CNT and silicon-field effective transistor berkeley short-channel IGFET Model4 (BSIM4) predictive technology model (PTM) for MOS is done in H simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis for 32 nm.

Design/methodology/approach

Usually, the dynamic power consumption dominates the total power, while the leakage power has a negligible effect. But with the scaling of device technology, leakage power has become one of the important factors of consideration in low power design techniques. Various strategies are explored to suppress the leakage power in standby mode. The adoption of a multi-threshold design strategy is an effective approach to improve the performance of buffer circuits without compromising on the delay and area overhead. Unlike MOS technology, to implement multi-Vt transistors in case of CNT technology is quite easy. It can be achieved by varying diameter of carbon nanotubes using chirality control.

Findings

An unprecedented approach is taken for optimizing the delay and power dissipation and hence drastically reducing energy consumption by keeping proper harmony between wire technology and repeater-buffer technology. This paper proposes two novel ultra-low power buffers (PB1 and PB2) as repeaters for high-speed interconnect applications in portable devices. PB1 buffer implemented with high-speed CML technique nested with multi-threshold (Vt) technology sleep transistor so as to improve the speed along with a reduction in standby power consumption. PB2 is judicially implemented by inserting separable sized, dual chirality P type carbon nanotube field effective transistors. The HSpice simulation results justify the correctness of schemes.

Originality/value

Result analysis points out that compared to conventional Cu interconnect, the CNT interconnects paired with Proposed CNTFET buffer designs are more energy efficient. PB1 saves dynamic power by 84.86%, reduces propagation delay by 72% and leakage power consumption by 88%. PB2 brings about dynamic power saving of 99.4%, leakage power saving of 93%, with improvement in speed by 52%. This is mainly because of the fact that CNT interconnect offers low resistance and CNTFET drivers have high mobility and ballistic mode of operation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore how social entrepreneurship empowers women and how it influences the existing gender based intersectionalities in the society. This paper is based on a single case study of a social entrepreneurial startup called “Pahal,” which used social entrepreneurial strategies to encourage women to engage in economic activities, which helped them in gaining economic empowerment.

Design/methodology/approach

The researcher alongside the social entrepreneur visited the field for eight months from August 2016 to March 2017 and interviewed multiple stakeholder-employees (as partners) of the social enterprise. This study was done by conducting interviews with all the stakeholders in all the three social entrepreneurial phases, i.e. pre-Pahal, during-Pahal and after-Pahal. The interviews and observations were recorded and analysed using social entrepreneurial lens and intersectionality.

Findings

“Pahal Initiative” – is a social entrepreneurial intervention that helped the women in the household to start a food delivery business with the support of the social entrepreneur. Consequently, women gained confidence and self-respect. The attitude of men in the household changed when the women in the household generated additional income. It impacted their position and status which led to an increase in their participation in decision-making in the household and economic independence. The women become more interactive and expressive in a predominantly patriarchal household. Within one year, the entrepreneur had to stop the Pahal initiative. Then, this study observed and recorded that this event curtailed the economic activities undertaken by the women in their village and their social status reverted to what it was before the initiative.

Practical implications

First, social entrepreneurial strategies lead to economic value creation and lead overall socio-economic gains. Second, social entrepreneurial strategies address the problems of patriarchy and gender discrimination. Third, economic activities undertaken by women changed the social perceptions of the family members towards women in the families.

Social implications

From this case study, one observes that social entrepreneurship has a strong potential to bring about social and economic change. This study helps policymakers and non-governmental organisations to solve poverty and gender discrimination related problems using social entrepreneurial strategies.

Originality/value

This study uses social entrepreneurial intervention to understand and bring about change in the socio-economic status of women in rural India. This study uses an intersectionality lens to make sense of the data, reality and reflects on how intersectional positions are altered when women are economically empowered either through training or through a proper organisation or both.

Abstract

Purpose

In a consumer-driven world, captivating experiences are increasingly vital and retailers prioritise them for consumers. This study aims to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework that explores the impact of a consumer's multi-sensory and atmospheric experiences on their intention and commitment to a mall, with perceived value acting as a mediating factor.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a descriptive quantitative research approach and utilised a self-administered mall-intercept survey. A total of 380 shoppers participated in and responded to the survey administered at the mall. The collected responses are analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

Study findings show that experiences significantly influence consumers' intentions to patronise shopping malls, leading to their commitment. The study reveals a strong impact of atmospheric experience on multi-sensory experiences. Furthermore, perceived value mediates the relationship between consumers' experiences and their mall patronage intention.

Originality/value

The research sheds light on the significance of atmospheric elements in creating sensory experiences for consumers. Additionally, the study introduces the concept of “props” as essential components of the atmospheric experiences in retail stores and malls. Furthermore, the study advances inference theory by exploring the effects of these sensory and atmospheric experiences within the shopping mall environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore what are the past trends in internationalisation of higher education (IoHE) in the country and how India's higher education (HE) internationalisation strategies are aligned to make India a regional education hub and a storehouse of global talent pool.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper relies heavily on secondary sources of information. Document analysis and policy reviews to analyse the internationalisation strategies as well as quantitative data analysis to map the trends have been used.

Findings

At present, internationalisation in India is lopsided and may become a drain on Indian economy if not balanced soon. India is now focussing to correct its adverse inbound–outbound international student (IS) mobility in order to become attractive for international HE community; India aims to strategically “prepare to host,” which is subject to institutional abilities to implement new schemes and programmes. International credibility of Indian HE rests largely on quality augmentation.

Research limitations/implications

The study is based purely on secondary sources. It would be interesting to augment further with primary-level interactions with both policymakers and practitioners.

Practical implications

It is a mix of academic and non-academic factors leading to improved quality of teaching, learning and competency-building in the higher education institutions (HEIs) rather than financial doles and incentives that should draw international academics to India in order to make the global traffic two way and financially viable for the country. IoHE to become viable and financially sustainable requires more comprehensive institutional efforts and mechanisms to bring in fee-paying ISs, research grants and multinational industry endowments.

Social implications

With more fee-paying outbound students and more non-fee-paying or highly subsidised inbound student growth, the situation is already critical in terms of financial implications. This can have long-term implications of societal divide arising out of “global academic impoverishment” of majority Indian students unless state-supported assistance to ensure equitable access to international opportunities is provided to the needy students in the country.

Originality/value

This article is an analytical update on India's HE internationalisation and can be a valuable resource for policymakers, analysts as well as researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

This research lies in the domain of Vedic mathematics, and it explores the application of the related Vedic sutras in different branches of mathematics, science, education, and engineering across Asia and Europe.

Design/methodology/approach

The study embraced a qualitative research design followed by a systematic literature review (SLR) approach which describes the significance of Vedic mathematics. The study made use of purposive sampling through which the data were collected from 102 articles by using inclusion and exclusion criteria. It includes publication years, the types of research methods, and uses of Vedic mathematics sutras in different branches of knowledge stated by the researchers. Its goal is to offer a more thorough explanation and an evaluation of how the inquiry affected the conclusions. The articles examined in this review included all the journal articles and doctoral theses from the databases of Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, and Sodhganga which were published during the period 2010–2022.

Findings

The research found that the application of the sutras of Vedic mathematics has been increasing immensely in India. The researchers in this area are fond of qualitative research methods. This research has shown that sutras of Vedic mathematics especially “Urdhvatiryakbhyam” and “Nikhilam Navatascaramana Dasastah” have been frequently used in mathematics and engineering in technical higher education. The impact of other sutras has been quite useful, which augments that in many disciplines where the applications of Vedic mathematics are prevalent, it can be functional. The study concludes by reprising the result, its limitations, and the use of Vedic mathematics as a sustainable source of knowledge.

Research limitations/implications

Vedic mathematics is an area where a lot of potential applications are created in science, mathematics, engineering, and education. Even with the latest technological advancements like learning analytics, artificial intelligence has its connection with this branch of learning, which is the greatest treasure of the Indian knowledge system. The research in this area is not reported in any databases or any standard format so researchers find it difficult to locate and study this broad conceptual domain.

Practical implications

It will help the reader and other academic stakeholders to widen their view on the new and innovative techniques of Vedic mathematics. It is advised that additional studies would look at and evaluate papers published after this time so that readers may get a wider view of the concept of Vedic mathematics.

Social implications

It will help society to know the essence of Vedic mathematics that how useful it is. Vedic mathematics helps learners to learn in a very factual and accurate manner especially while dealing with mathematical calculations. It will enhance the problem-solving skills among learners. It will be beneficial for all types of learners which will help them to become better individuals for a nation.

Originality/value

The paper enriches understanding of the potential applications of different sutras from Vedic literature in different fields of knowledge. The outcome of the research encourages educationists and policymakers to include Vedic mathematics in the curriculum to foster quantitative reasoning and problem-solving at varied levels of learning.
